Olympic Week in Schools - First Modern Olympic Games: 130 years later | 25 - 29 May 2026

Registration for the participation in the Olympic week until Tuesday 25 May 2021 at 13.00

The Olympic education - Olympic week in schools programme includes a set of actions that highlight the educational value of the Olympic Games.

The actions concern the acquisition of knowledge, sports and social skills and values. They combine the ancient and modern history of the Games with the learning of skills relevant to the integration of students in the school social environment such as:

  • raise awareness of values such as friendship, respect for diversity, volunteering and solidarity,
  • learn about the history and spirit of the Ancient Olympic Games,
  • be informed on issues related to the Modern Olympic Games and the 2004 Olympic Games,
  • to be informed and sensitized to the Olympic ideals and the ethical issues related to sport and the Olympic Games,
  • understand issues related to human rights,
  • become familiar with the principles of democracy,
  • understand and approach the concepts of volunteering, diversity and social responsibility,
  • understand high ideals such as peace,
  • gain experience and knowledge about the beneficial effects of exercise on health.

The Olympic Week involves two age categories of groups of students 6-12 years old and 13 to 15 years old (primary and secondary school) and will be implemented by the 31 May to 4 June 2021.

The main axes of awareness-raising for students will be:

  • Ancient Olympic Games
  • Modern Olympic Games
  • Greece 2004 - Athens 2004
  • Olympic Ideals - ethical issues
  • Olympic week - Instructions

A key priority is given to the integration of Olympism, the establishment of innovative actions and activities in line with the modern pedagogical approach, linking theory with practice.

The main purpose of the Olympic Week is to reach and involve all those involved in education and training, to inspire, sensitize and motivate the students of Greece in the formation of attitudes, skills and values, which are derived from the Olympic Games and the values of Olympism.

During the Olympic Week there will be online meetings through the zoom platform with distinguished Greek athletes and Olympians, live connection with the Museum and the Stadium of Ancient Olympia and links to the following 4 thematic units, Ancient Olympic Games, Modern Olympic Games, Athens 2004 and Olympic Ideals - Olympic Values.

School units or class sections may choose to attend any part of the proposed modules they wish, according to the instructions in the circular.

During the Olympic week, it is important to organise parallel sports and physical activities within the school units, so that students can participate per class or per class. These activities can be small leagues, competitive activities, simulated sports, or experiential activities that teachers consider appropriate for the optimal motivation of students.

We encourage all school units that wish to participate in the Olympic Week to encourage their students to learn about the principles, values and philosophy of Olympism and to participate in as many activities as they wish.

If it is deemed necessary, by the teachers, for the better preparation of the activities, as much teaching time as necessary can be devoted in Primary School through the Physical Education lesson and the flexible zone and in Secondary School through the Physical Education lesson and the Culture and Activities subjects.

Read the detailed programme and make the choice or choices you wish.

You will then need to click on each of the modules you wish to participate in to be taken to the registration form and then fill in all the information requested.

A few days before the date you have registered, you will receive the link to connect to the zoom platform.

For your participation in the online meetings with the distinguished athletes and Olympians, we ask each participating school unit to prepare and send us at [email protected] a question that the students wish to ask the athlete in question. The question will be asked by a student from your School, who will be nominated by you.
