Olympic Week in Schools - First Modern Olympic Games: 130 years later | 25 - 29 May 2026

World Day of Sport for Development and Peace

The World Day of Sport for Development and Peace (International Day of Sport for Development and Peace) was established on 23 August 2013, by a unanimous resolution of the UN General Assembly and is celebrated every year on 6 April.

Its aim is to highlight the importance of sport in promoting peace and reconciliation in the world and in combating discrimination in all its forms, prejudice, fear and misunderstanding, which contribute to human development.

The choice of April 6 as the World Day of Sport for Development and Peace - instead of June 23, as originally proposed - was made at the suggestion of the Permanent Mission of Greece to the UN, as this is the day of the revival of the modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896 (New Calendar).

From the Panathinaikos Stadium, the Olympians picked up the white card, Varvara Magnisali (Rhythmic Gymnastics), George Chalkidis and Alexander Albanos (Handball), Christina Zachariadou (Tennis) and athletes Anna Charalambidi (Water polo) and Sofia Simantiri (Voley).

The 1st Primary School of Nea Filadelfia and the 8th Primary School of Thebes raised the white card for the World Day of Sport for Development and Peace from the Panathenaic Stadium
