Olympic Week in Schools - First Modern Olympic Games: 130 years later | 25 - 29 May 2026

The 3rd Olympic week started

The 3rd Olympic Week, a program implemented by the Hellenic Olympic Committee, started with great success and the participation of 29.720 students from 678 Schools, the 3rd Olympic Week Hellenic Olympic Committee and the National Olympic Academy in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.

This year's theme is «I know the Olympic sports - I learn about sustainability and the healthy way to live» and the interest and participation of schools from all over Greece, Cyprus and the Greek Diaspora is great!

The President of ETHNOA, Mr. George Alikakos, opened the 3rd Olympic Week, stressing the importance of Olympic Education for young people in our country, stating his pleasure that this year the Schools of Cyprus and the Greek Diaspora are participating and stressed that our goal is for this programme to spread everywhere. He also concluded his address by saying that at the end of the 3rd Olympic Week, an electronic draw will be held and one school from each educational region, as well as one school from Cyprus and one from the Greek Diaspora, will be given the opportunity to make a free three-day trip to Ancient Olympia with expenses covered by the HOC and ETHNOA.

The draw will take place on Friday 12 May 2023, with the programme ending at 10.00 live.

Then, Mr. Dimitris Kereres, Director of Physical Education, delivered a speech on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, who also stressed the importance of Olympic Education and thanked the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the National Olympic Academy for the excellent and constructive cooperation.

The Olympic week could not but start from the place where the Ancient Olympic Games were born, Ancient Olympia...

The archaeologist of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Elis, Mr. Kostas Antonopoulos took the students who were watching us on a magical journey through time through the Museum of the History of the Olympic Games of Antiquity.

Then, the students learned information about the Olympic Games that will be held in Paris in 2024 and they were given the opportunity through the very interesting presentations made by Mr.Michalis Fountedakis for breaking, the athlete Mrs.Athanasia Liouni for competitive climbing, the athlete Mr. Nikos Plytas for surfing and Mr. Angel Artelaris for the wheel board, to get to know better, the new sports that we will see in Paris, which they were excited.

Then, on the occasion of the 3rd Olympic week, the students met our Olympic champions athletes Evangelia Plataniotis, Nikos Mavromatis, Christos Vollikakis and the world champion Penelope Nika, with whom they talked.

They were given the opportunity to learn about their sports, their rules and their daily habits and the diet they follow in order to achieve their goal.

The Olympic Week continues in the coming days with undiminished interest from Schools of our country, Cyprus and the Greek community.
