Celebration of the Olympic Day 2020

The International Olympic Committee has designated 23rd of June as Olympic Day. That day was founded at the Sorbonne, Paris, in 1894, where Pierre de Coubertin rallied the revival of the Olympic Games and so the first Modern Olympic Games were awarded in Athens (1896). The HOC and all the National Olympic Committees around the world, following the IOC's decision, celebrate Olympic Day June 23rd each year. The HOA in June last year carried out a series of actions:

  1. Online Olympic Day Marathon across the country, where everyone could participate, sending a message in favor of sport. Posts posted on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter exceeded 60,000 and 9,500 respectively.
  2. Online relay of Greek Olympians (video) who sent their message for Olympic Day giving each one a letter from the formation of the phrase "Olympic Day 2020". «Olympic Day 2020. 
  3. Online paintings dedicated to Olympic Day in collaboration with the Children's Municipal Gallery featured works by young creators on an exhibition of paintings that drew inspiration from the values of Olympism, dedicated to Olympic Day. The videos of the Olympians and online paintings were viewed more than 12,000 times.
  4. Celebration of Olympic Day in Ancient Olympia with Municipal Primary Schools, School of Ancient Olympia, School of Pelopiou, School of Platanou and the School of Lala. 
  5. Celebration of Olympic Day in YMCA Thessaloniki with sports activities (Basketball, Tennis, Tennis, Handball, Laser run, Fencing).
  6. For the first time, The Olympic Day was celebrated in all the Primary Schools of the country that wished to participate, dedicating teaching time of Physical Education to the Olympic Day, with sports activities, always following the applicable health protocols. Thus students were given the opportunity to get to know the Olympic values and discover new sports, through the pillars "move, learn, discover". In the context of the celebration, Olympic values, timeless and universal values such as friendship, respect, solidarity, fair play and the joy of sport, creation and learning were promoted.
  7. Virtual triathlon/duathlon in collaboration with the sports club of Kosteas Geitonas, a virtual childrens’ triathlon race was held for ages 5-14 (bike, swimming, running).
  8. Connect Athens – sports activities such as Yoga and Football took place in collaboration with the Connect your City Training Centre in Porto Rafti.
  9. Η Ios Adventure held sports activities at Mylopotamos beach to celebrate Olympic Day.
