SIGNING OF A MEMORANDUM OF COOPERATION BETWEEN THE NATIONAL OLYMPIC ACADEMY AND THE CULTURAL, SPORTS AND YOUTH ORGANIZATION OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF PIRAEUS

The National Olympic Academy (ETHNOA) and the Sports Culture & Youth Organization of the Municipality of Piraeus (OPAN) signed today a cooperation protocol for a common goal concerning the integration of sports education in education and in particular the promotion of the values of Olympism to young people.

The President of ETHNOA George Alikakos and Vice President Elias Dalainas met with the President of OPAN Joseph Vourakis at the offices of the Hellenic Olympic Committee for the signing of the protocol of cooperation. In a very friendly and pleasant atmosphere, they exchanged views on the importance of educating children on issues related to Olympism and on how important it is for the young people of the country that gave birth to the Olympic Games to learn about their history and the values they represent worldwide.

The Memorandum of Understanding sets the basis for a cooperation aimed at promoting Sport and Olympism in education, such as:

The implementation of joint cultural and educational actions aimed at promoting the principles and values of sport and Olympism, the dissemination of the Olympic Idea and fair play.

Supporting projects that promote sport, volunteering in general and culture.

The preservation and promotion of the national sporting and Olympic heritage.

The information and activation of the public, on issues of sports and cultural heritage.

On the occasion of this meeting and the signing of the memorandum, the two parties also agreed that it is very important that young people have the opportunity to get to know and try less popular sports such as shooting, fencing or judo.

On the occasion of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, the President of ETHNOA Mr. George Alikakos commented:

«We have started a cooperation with the Municipality of Piraeus which I hope will last for a long time so that we can bring the youth closer to sport and Olympism and also give young people the opportunity to get to know less popular sports and thus maybe talents will emerge that will bring future Olympic medals to Greece. ETHNOA will continue to seek such collaborations and to disseminate its work and actions through its broad educational work on Olympic Education».

For his part, Mr. Vourakis thanked Mr. Alikakos and Mr. Dalaina for this cooperation, stressing: «Generally in the Municipality of Piraeus we like to do actions and not to stay in words. I am very happy for the signing of this memorandum and I consider this cooperation one of the most important and constructive collaborations I have done so far in the Municipality of Piraeus.
