On June 23, the Athens Olympic Museum celebrated with great success the World Olympic Day, with an event dedicated to building a better world for all. This year's event had the message «Together for a better world». The theme of the Olympic Day for 2022 focused on peace with the slogan #MoveForPeace or Together for Peace, and invited young and old who came to the Athens Olympic Museum to share the festive atmosphere with crafts, events and interesting speeches.
The Museum was attended by important guests such as representatives of the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) and the National Olympic Academy (NOC), under whose auspices this year's Olympic Day was organized in our country, as well as the Olympic champions Neri Niaguara and Nikos Kaklamanakis. Mr. Yannis Karras, a regular member of the EOC, spoke to the children who attended the event about the message of this year's Olympic Day «Move for Peace” and its importance in their daily lives. The two Olympians shared their experience with the attendees and touched the audience with details of their own journey to success and the challenges they encountered along the way. At the same time, Nikos Kaklamanakis, through his two speeches, referred to the unique moments he experienced at the Olympics he participated in and encouraged his audience to «dare to dream».
World Olympic Day is dedicated to the institution of the Olympic Games and its celebration was established by the International Olympic Committee on the basis of the day of its foundation by Pierrede Coubertin in Paris in 1894, and the awarding of the first Modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896. For 2022 it was celebrated with major events on all five continents.
The Olympic champion Nikos Kaklamanakis said: «It is a great honor to be at the Athens Olympic Museum and to celebrate today, which has a special place in my heart. Sport can be a very important vehicle in creating a better world and I thank the Museum for the opportunity to give my perspective, contributing to this cause, especially to the young friends who attended the event.» Meanwhile, Olympian Neri Nyagura added: «Today's day has great significance because it reminds everyone that the institution of the Olympic Games, apart from its sporting importance, promotes important moral values and virtues in human beings, which are needed today more than ever.»
Finally, the Director of the Museum, Maria Papaioannou said «I am very happy that young and old came to the Athens Olympic Museum to celebrate with us this important day. The Museum, true to its promise to be an ark of Olympism in our country, organized this event promoting the sporting spirit and its values and hosting important representatives of these values in our country. We intend to continue with many more actions throughout the year that serve this purpose.»
The celebration was also attended by the children who participate in the Summer Camp, which is successfully held in the Museum's premises and aims to engage children in creative and sporting activities during the summer months.
