OLYMPIC DAY IN KASTELLORIZO

The Hellenic Olympic Committee and the National Olympic Academy participated in the celebration of the Olympic Day 2023 with an extremely successful mission to the island of Kastelorizo.

The Olympians and our Champions-Champions, immediately after disembarking from the ship, a few meters from the stern, were warmly welcomed by students and people of the island, with slogans and happy voices, filling us with enthusiasm and pride, something that was intense throughout our stay.

Our contact with the children, the sporting activities, the presentation of the Olympic Values programme quickly became a topic of discussion among locals and tourists alike. Megisti became for a while a small “Olympic Stadium” where the children learned from our Olympians and Champions-Champions the secrets of their sports and the joy they offer to those involved in them.

This year's Olympic Day was dedicated to physical exercise through the slogan Lets'Move! So, young and old alike sent their own message to get active by encouraging people to dedicate a little of their time every day to physical activity and feel the mental and physical benefits of an active lifestyle.

Our Athletes, who lived magical moments with the... Castellorizoupoulakia, were:

  • Victor Mitrou| Silver medal in weightlifting - Sydney 2000
  • Nikos Skiathitis | Rowing bronze medal - Athens 2004
  • Yannis Tsilis | 4η rowing position - London 2012
  • Angelos Lemanis | World Sailing Champion 2006
  • Anna Charalambidou | Water Polo Champion
  • Denise Panagopoulou | Tennis Champion

During our stay on the Island, in the framework of the celebration of the Olympic Day 2023, under the auspices of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the Hellenic Olympic Academy and co-organized by the Municipality of Megisti-Castelorizo, the 2nd Rock Solid trail running event took place. In this event participated the Olympic rowing champion Yannis Tsilis, as a runner, but also the Olympic rowing champion Nikos Skiathitis and the water polo champion Anna Charalambidou, as volunteers-supporters of the event. “Organizing” the Island they gave us a taste of its beauties in the photos below.

We would like to thank the local government and especially the deputy mayor Stratis Amygdalos and the municipal councillor Margarita Kani for their warm welcome, their unsurpassed hospitality and for the facilities they provided us to implement our programme.

Special mention to Vassilis Kanakaris, tireless trainer of the Island, organizer of Rock Solid trail running, who was always present where the needs of our Program required him.

We left Kastelorizo behind us with the promise that we will come back to introduce the kids to other sports!
