December 3rd has been established by the UN as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPs) with the central aim of eliminating all discrimination and ensuring equal opportunities for people with disabilities.
In the context of the celebration of the day for people with disabilities, the National Olympic Committee together with the Olympic basketball champion, Polly Sarregou, started a series of visits to the schools of Thessaloniki.
The first stations were the 1st VEEEK of Pylaia-Hortiati and the National Foundation for the Protection of Deaf-Barekonians in Thessaloniki.
With the valuable cooperation of the experienced and excellent trainers, Natasha Kyriakidou (1st VEEEK Pylaia-Hortiati) and Ioanna Fotiadou (National Foundation for the Protection of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing), we focused on the students' abilities, adapted the activities and implemented them so that the children could experience the joy of effort through various sports.
«.......Every man is made - by nature - to look up, to envision and to try to reach his dream.
But to do so, he needs wings to help him get there faster and easier. The wings are everyone's skills.
Some, however, have smaller wings and feel different. Nevertheless, they too can soar high - but they need someone beside them to teach them how to spread their wings and fly higher.
People with disabilities have their own unique and special wings.
Their flight becomes more beautiful when others gently stroke their wings and fly with them.».
Sport and inclusive education is the most effective means of combating discrimination, creating welcoming communities, building an inclusive society and achieving sport and education for all.
