Road of Remembrance of the Massacres of Chios 1822-2022

In the context of the anniversary events held for the «CHIOI 1822 - 2022 (LAMPADIMIA) MEMORIAL ROAD OF REMEMBRANCE», Olympic sports were presented by distinguished athletes and members of the National Olympic Academy of Greece (NOCA) who participated in the event.

At the same time, speeches were given by our athletes to young and old about the sporting ideal and the moments they have experienced in sports and athletics at the Homeric Cultural Centre of Chios, at the «Maria's House» in Kardamyla, at the central square of Nikolaos Plastira, but also in many villages of our island. The atmosphere was very touching, as the personal references to their experiences touched both young and old, arousing their lively interest and direct participation. It was a unique experience for all.

They spoke:

1) The legendary Ultra Running Champion Yannis Kouros,

2) The multi-champion Marathon Road Champion Nikos Polias (nikos_polias),

3) The Mountain & Marathon Road Champion Dimitris Theodorakakos (Dimitris Theodorakakos),

4) The multi-champion Marathon Champion Christoforos Merousis (Christoforos Merousis),

5) The Olympic Champion & Water Polo Champion Giannis Fountoulis - Giannis Fountoulis (member of the National Olympic Committee),

7) The Marathon champion Sofia Riga (Sofia Riga)

8) Panagiotis Angelopoulos, Coach of the National Olympic Academy (Modern Pentathlon, Laser Run)

9) Ioannis Alikakos, Handball Coach and Athlete and collaborator of the National Olympic Academy.

The children actively participating in sports (Fencing, Modern Pentathlon Laser Run and Handball) experienced unique moments next to the coaches of the National Olympic Team and our champions.

Thank you all for participating in this huge memorial for our ancestors. It is a moral duty to all of us to remember who we owe our freedom to.
