Kaimakli B Municipal (KB): reviving Olympic values and Olympic ideals

The Kaimakli Municipal B(KB) participated in the «Olympic Education-4th Olympic Week in Schools» program of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the National Olympic Academy, which took place at the premises of Ancient Olympia from 31 May to 2 June 2024. 12 primary and secondary schools, 1 School of Cyprus, 1 School of the Omani community from Cyprus, 1 School of the Omani community from Africa and 1 School of the Omani community from Germany participated in the programme, after a lottery. The theme of the Olympic Week 2024 was «The Olympic Week on the road to Paris 2024».

The children met Olympic champions, World and European champions who consistently serve the «Fair Play» and the Olympic Ideals, had the opportunity to be introduced to shooting, handball, laser-running, rowing, weightlifting, athletics and the innovative game Run & Out. At the same time, they were informed by Dr. Pella Petraki-Kavvadia about the contribution of exercise to improving health. All students received a health card as a guide to a healthy lifestyle and good health habits. They also participated in many interactive games and working groups, with scenarios of managing defeat from different perspectives, bullying and became for a while little journalists, presenting their own radio show, having done a «virtual» interview with an Olympic/Paralympic champion which gave them full joy and pleasure and they said goodbye to Ancient Olympia with excitement! The educational visit ended with our visit to the environmental centre of Koumani followed by an environmental activity in the beautiful forest of Fologi.

During the project the students of our school presented a short film[1] on the profile of our school and the development of Olympic values. The committee congratulated the children for the initiative and officially invited them through a delegation of our students to participate by presenting the film and their impressions at the 34th Session of the National Olympic Academy of Cyprus which took place on Saturday 15 June at the Olympic Hall, Nicosia. A short extract from the impressions and experiences expressed by the children:

«E Th N O O A (National Olympic Academy): it's a short 5 letters to describe the experiences for the project but we will use the initials for each of our descriptions.

E (EPSILON): indicates our enthusiasm, the kindness of the organisers and the success of the programme.

I (THETA): indicates the will and courage not to give up.

N (NI): reveals our personal victory to fight for.

O (OMICRON): Olympia, we will remember the beauty of the ancient site, meeting the Olympic champions and the excellent organisation of the programme.

A (ALFA): indicates the sports I first experienced and the word edge where we would go to the end of the world to participate in the program again.

But the most important thing we learned from the program is: no matter what we lose, if we have given 100% of ourselves, we will feel proud because we will have tried!!!»

Warm thanks from our school for the excellent organization of the whole program, to the Director Mrs.Denise Panagopoulou, to the President of the National Organization of the Greek National Olympic Committee Mr.George Alikakos and all the contributors who with their contribution bring to the maximum the success of the work they perform.
