Awareness raising and inclusion: The Olympic Champion Polly Sarregou at the 1st High School of Thermi

Polly Sarregou, Olympic basketball champion, visited the 1st Gymnasium of Thermi, inviting the students to gain a deeper understanding of the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities, in honor of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3 December 2025).

During the event, a video was shown followed by a speech highlighting the daily barriers faced by people with disabilities and ways to overcome them through education, accessibility and inclusion.

Particular emphasis was placed on recognising diversity as an asset rather than a weakness. It was stressed that even small changes in our daily lives, such as removing prejudices, can help create a more just and welcoming environment.

The students realized the power that every human being has, regardless of their abilities or limitations, while the successes of the Paralympians were mentioned, reminding that disability is not a barrier, but a different reality that requires solidarity and empathy.

Through the values of Olympism, respect and friendship, the vision for a society where diversity becomes a strength and everyone lives with dignity, equality and respect was highlighted.
