Lecture by Professor Stamatis Krimizis at the HOC on: «Planet Earth, our only home. The environment as an Olympic Value»

On Thursday, November 6, at the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) Amphitheatre, the interactive lecture of Professor Stamatis Krimizis, Honorary Supervisor of the Space Department of Johns Hopkins University and member of the Academy of Athens, took place on «Planet Earth, our only home. The environment as an Olympic Value». Professor Stamatis Krimizis spoke about the universe, the solar system and the Earth, emphasizing the connection between sustainability and the Olympic Values. He presented the history of the planet and its course in combination with the human presence and concluded his speech with a resounding message for the future of mankind: «Humanity is opening two Pandora's boxes at the same time: Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change. The survival of the human species depends on how well we can manage both.».

The event was held on the initiative of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the Environment Committee, in cooperation with the International and the National Olympic Academy, as part of the actions that promote environmental sensitivity and Olympic Education.

Stamatis Krimizis is a distinguished Greek space physics scientist, born in Vrontados, Chios. He studied Physics and Space Science in the United States and has been a lead and principal scientist on historic NASA missions such as Voyager, Cassini, MESSENGER and New Horizons. His autobiographical book «All in a Lifetime» traces his journey from Chios to Space.
