The National Olympic Academy with great sadness says goodbye to George Alikakos

The National Olympic Academy expresses its deep emotion for the loss of Giorgos Alikakos, a man who served with dedication and ethics the Greek sport and supported with many years of action the work of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and the National Olympic Academy.

His presence was decisive for the promotion of the values of Olympism and for the support of Greek athletes, whom he always stood by with love, respect and faith in their potential. His consistency, diligence and selfless spirit left an indelible imprint on the Olympic and sporting family.

A pioneer in the presence and development of handball in Greece, he will be remembered as a model of ethics and commitment. The void he leaves is a big one, but his legacy will continue to inspire those who work for the good of sport and the country.


The President of the National Olympic Academy Demosthenes Tabakos said : «George Alikakos served the National Olympic Academy with love and consistency. His work, which was developed during his tenure and is reflected in the educational programs, international collaborations, the dissemination of Olympic values and the promotion of social responsibility, is an important legacy that we are called upon to continue and develop.

We bid him farewell with respect and gratitude.

Who was George Alikakos

Giorgos Alikakos was born in Athens and graduated as an electrical engineer. He is married to Mrs. Lilia Alikakou and they have a son Ioannis Alikakos, a journalist by profession.

Active in sports from an early age. He played football for Aphobos Egaleo and Paneliakos. He was a member of the Hellenic Olympic Committee from 1993 to 2001 and from 2013 to 2025. He has served as Deputy Secretary General of the HOC, member of the Olympic Preparation Committee in the periods 1993-1997, 2009-2013, member of the Board of Directors of the Olympic Committee and from 2017 to 2025 he was President of the National Olympic Academy.

Since 1976 he was a pioneer of handball in Greece together with Miltiadis Boufidis and Dimos Maglaras, with the first club being Afovo Athens.

For 21 years, from 1976 to 1997, he was President, Vice President and Secretary General of the Hellenic Handball Federation of Greece. He was President of the Hellenic Federation of Modern Pentathlon (2017-2021) and was the Federation's representative to the Hellenic Olympic Committee.
