With great solemnity, the anniversary event for the 180th anniversary of the birth of Ioannis Fokianos took place at the Zappeion Hall, in the framework of the European and Panhellenic Day of School Sports, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports and the Directorate of Physical Education of the Ministry of Defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was dedicated to Ioannis Fokianos, the father of gymnastics in Greece and founder of school physical education, who contributed decisively to the promotion of exercise and sport in the Greek educational system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In attendance, among others, were the Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Mrs Sofia Zacharaki and the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Mr Isidoros Kouvelos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event was attended by the President of the National Olympic Academy of Greece (ETHNOA), gold and silver medalist Mr.Demosthenes Tabakos, who was honoured for his contribution to the promotion of the Olympic Ideal and the values of sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, Mr. Demosthenes Tabakos expressed his emotion for the honorary distinction and stressed the timeless importance of the work of Ioannis Fokianos. He stressed that an education system fails when it focuses on success and not on happiness, as the purpose of education is to guide people to \u00abfulfill their destiny\u00bb, so that they can work towards this goal and contribute to society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He referred to the two deceased Olympic champions, Alexander Ioakimidis and Athanasios Kapnidis, who, like Ioannis Fokianos, chose to dedicate their work to the progress of society, taking it one step forward. Such individuals, he stressed, are beacons that shine by example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
